Behrooz Rezai

Dr. Behrooz Rezai

Citizenship: U.S.A.

Degree: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics

Special Fields of Knowledge:

Mathematical Algorithms of Physical Systems, Atmospheric Aerosols Physics, Theoretical Atmospheric Radioactive Transfer.  Developed Software for Testing and Data Acquisition, Performance Assessment of Satellite Parameters.

Technology Experience - Skill has been employed in the use of various programming languages, scientific software packages, and computer platforms.

In Research;

Mixing Code has been written in C, IDL, NCL, MODTRAN/FASCOD, ENVI (The Remote Sensing Exploitation Package) and FORTRAN on mainframes, minicomputers, and microcomputers to support and facilitate independent research. This includes computerized algorithms of physical systems and formulating code for real and simulated data analysis.  Software utilities employed in these projects were: MATLAB, MATHCAD, and JAVA.  UNIX environment and Window system was used to implement the code.   Also a working knowledge of HTML and World Wide Web has been acquired.

In Education;

Instructional materials have been developed using EXCEL, PowerPoint, and HTML-KIT in addition to the software mentioned above. Spreadsheets served as a major delivery tools, as well as basic analytical tool for the student laboratory and the training seminar discussion exercises.

Research Experience - Contributions have been made in the areas of: atmospheric science, TIR, IR sensor, calibration, data handling & analysis, retrieval algorithm, and nonlinear systems.

In Atmospheric Science;  At a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, (Earth Science Section) as a research scientist fellow since 2005, implication of ASTER Thermal Infrared (TIR) calibration monitoring effort going forward to on demand processing. Validation of Landsat 7 ETM+ band 6 radiometric performance has been evaluated using vicarious techniques for both land and water target.

At a NASA Ames Research Center, (Atmospheric Physics Branch) as a research scientist fellow for 2002 to 2003, main research interests focused on the physics and chemistry of the formation and evolution of atmospheric aerosols, main subjects consisting of thermodynamics and kinetics of multi-component nucleation, condensation, and freezing.

 Also as a NASA /CLAES-UARS Faculty Fellow, 1983 to 1998, at the Center for Atmospheric and Space Sciences/Utah State University (CASS/USU) at Logan Utah , a new technique was designed for solving comprehensive sets of photochemical rate equations that derives from an earlier "family" scheme. Also algorithms were developed for the CLAES Global Climatologic Model research group to assist in their effort to retrieve temperature-pressure profiles and validate Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) species data.

In Optical/Sensor Calibration; As a AFGL/CIRRS-1A Research Fellow, (Cryogenic Infrared Radiation Instrumentation of Shuttle) 1992 to 1998, at the Space Dynamics Laboratory/Utah State University, contributions have been made for the system division group to support post flight infrared calibration.

In Data Handling and Analysis; Interferograms from CIRRIS-1A were quality controlled and processed to spectral radiance using the interferometer processing routines (OPUS). Wide ranges of atmospheric radiation information were collected and allocated to the collection of vertical profile spectral radiance.

In Retrieval Algorithm: An onion-peeling routine established which retrieved greenhouse gases concentrations from absolutely calibrated spectral data, using the Fast Atmospheric Signature Code-3 (FASCOD3P line-by-line), which used the HITRAN92 database, and temperature-pressure profiles to support interferometer convert processing research.  Incorporated the temperature and pressure profile simulated by the Penn State/NCAR numerical model, MM5. After the greenhouse gases data was retrieved, a powerful software visualization tool called IDL and NCL generated images.

In Non-Linear Systems; Activity on the New York Stock Exchange, as gauged by the S & P Index, was investigated.  A Fourier analysis and “phase space” analysis of this data was used to illustrate their chaotic features.

Teaching/Training Experience - Courses have been designed and offered in a broad spectrum of topics in the physical sciences and mathematics. Innovative teaching strategies have been formulated and employed. This has often included the creation of support materials and the designing of instructional activities/labs.
